Like some of us had predicted (because I for one, I do not have the spiritual gift of prophesy; and so I cannot prophecy; therefore at best, I can only make predictions based n obvious facts) that the church (in Nigeria) was going to fall into a serious trap as a result of her own defeating silence over the various posturing and political calculations at work; and it is now looking more like it each passing day (at least from what is going on).
I voiced this concern within a small circle of friends and equally shared it as an issue that was on my mind among the 2 things I am worried the most about. I am concerned about the fate and the future of the church in the post-pandemic era in Nigeria; and my fears are now becoming real.
When some of us raised the red flag that the guidelines for the reopening of churches (though disguised as being for religious or worship places as even some of our Christian leaders shouted and pointed at), some over spiritual brethren shouted at us from the rooftop (as usual because it is always people of faith that works against the church in their naked zeal to impress their bosses in their workplaces) that the guidelines cuts across religious lines without bothering to hear us out first; but now, the reality is gradually setting in and settling down.
I have mentioned it that the rolled out guidelines is a “dress rehearsal” for the other things that are to come; and that the silence of the church leaders AT A TIME AS THIS was just too dangerous for the moment because it carries within it a silent signal; but no one listened (because as usual, we looked up to our Fathers-in-Lord who are now MIA); but now it is becoming clearer for all to see.
What the authorities simply did was to test the water of their plots by running through the patience (or weakness or cowardice) of the church leaders and to feel their pulse so as to know what next to do or how best to handle their approach.
They wanted to see if the church will react by voicing their displeasure or concerns about some of the (ridiculous) instructions issued in the guidelines.
They wanted to see how the leaders of the church will react; if such leaders will fan their ambers or sharpen their teeth (whether it will be in readiness to strike back by biting or the teeth will be bowed in submission; from which the latter seems to be the case here).
They wanted to be sure that the church was alive and awake and not snoring away in her self induced sleep.
They wanted to see if the “Saints are marching on” and will stand on the divine authority of the spiritual declaration of our God that “I have built My church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it;” but since the leaders of faith accepted whatsoever insult that was thrown at them by playing the card of being “law abiding and obedient,” in which some churches have even gone ahead to display the NO MASK, NO ENTRY signs and banners round their premises in addition to urgently erecting wash hand basins with running water round the church compound (especially the entry points of the church), that action of strict compliance by the leaders of the christian faith gave those manipulating the spiritual situation from the political stand point the clearance that they needed to activate the next action plan within their play book; and now that their test exercise has produced the (surprised) result “of no objection” from the church who they had expected strong opposition from, the idea of reopening churches (in the disguise of religious worship centres) is easily suspended. And now, nobody knows what is coming NEXT?
